“Wear and Tear” Overuse Injuries Causes, Prevention, Do You Need Surgery (Ask Dr. B LIVE Ep.001)

How do you know if you need surgery for common wear and tear injuries in the shoulders, back or knees? Find out in this new episode of “Ask Dr. B” Live.

Whether we like it or not, wear and tear injuries affect all of us at some point in our lives. With each passing decade, the wear and tear from normal daily life, sporting activities and work accumulates.

Common wear and tear injuries, also known as overuse injuries or repetitive stress injuries, include spinal disc herniation, rotator cuff tears, torn meniscus and arthritis. Often times, there is an “event”… a twist, a turn, jump or lift and suddenly we are in pain. Often, we attribute the pain to the event, and are not aware of the effects that repetitive movement and stress on our muscles, tendons, bones and joints.

And… you don’t have to be ancient for this to affect you, particularly if you have played any sport or work at a heavy physical job. I am talking wear and tear that can start in your teens and early twenties, that if not addressed can end up limiting your ability to be active and do the things you love to do.

Today we will review how wear and tear accumulates in our musculoskeletal system and the manner in which it “sneaks” up on us. We will discuss the common treatment methods for wear and tear injuries and the role of surgery.

Using a case example involving a rotator cuff injury in a middle-aged national level female tennis player we will highlight key principles to emphasize how movement leads to imbalances in the body that can cause structural damage. By understanding these principles, we can change how we move to decrease the wear and tear and improve healing and recovery even if surgery if required.
