Waterproof Care | How To Look After Waterproof Jackets And Shorts

Decent waterproof kit allows you to ride your mountain bike in any weather. But as with any good bit of MTB kit it needs to be looked after and cared for properly. Technical fabrics like Gore-Tex are great at being breathable in all weather conditions, but require specific care. In this video Doddy shows you the best way to care and repair your waterproof jackets and shorts.

Gore-Tex is perhaps the most famous waterproof but breathable fabric commonly used, and for a good reason. It’s made up from different layers of fabric which work together to pass heat vapour away from your body, without letting wind or water through. The top layers have a durable water repellency (DWR) coating, which allows water to bead and roll off the garment rather than be absorbed.

The specific care tips for your garments can be found in the labels, and we recommend following them. Otherwise there are some simple day to day things that you can do to look after your clothing which will significantly extend their longevity. After a ride spray the garments down with water and allow them to drip dry. Clothing made from Gore-Tex can actually handle being washed regularly, whereas other materials will require reproofing after a wash to keep them waterproof. Just remember to wash on a low heat without fabric softeners.

Some fabrics will require a regular DWR coating to keep them effective, which is available as a handy spray. Just be sure to check what material your clothing is made out of, and how it should be applied. Materials like Gore-Tex should always retain their waterproofing and only require the DWR treatment to ensure the water beads on the surface.

Remember to lube your zips regularly to avoid them getting clogged with dirt and grit. If this happens it can be all to easy to accidentally tear your expensive jacket when trying to work the zip.

Specialist repair patches are available for most fabrics. Gore-Tex has a dedicated tear repair patch which irons on, whilst others can be fixed with a patch much like a puncture repair kit.
