Golf Alignment – How to Aim your Feet and Club at the Target

Make sure that when you address the ball you are aiming correctly for every one of your golf shots, no matter your skill level or handicap. Review this video for tips on how to align yourself correctly and for help in getting your golf alignment sorted out.

The first step is to aim the face of your club, its clubface. It should be aiming directly at the target, meaning that the surface of your club should be perpendicular to the target line. It is crucial to aim your clubface correctly because the club direction is the factor that matters most in the initial direction of the ball flight. Aim your clubface to the right of the target and your ball will want to begin its flight to the right (and likewise for a clubface aimed left of the target).

Next you’ll want to aim your body correctly and that begins with your toes. For a square stance and a straight shot you will want the line of your toes – if you were to position a club on the ground in front of your toes – to point directly forward. Neither aiming left, neither aiming right of the target.

Note that when the target is near you much like it would be for short putts with the hole close in front of you, you will want your feet to be aiming slightly left of the target and not at the target itself. And to be precise, you will want your feet to be pointing the same distance left of the target as the distance from your toes to the golf ball. That’s because a square stance is often referred to as parallel left. The line of your toes is parallel to the target line – the one between your ball and the target and these two lines, being parallel, should never cross nor ever meet, much like railroad tracks.

Finally, you will want to make sure that your knees, hips and shoulders are also pointing in the same direction as your toes.

Don’t hesitate to drop a club in front of your toes before executing a golf shot when you are unsure if your alignment is correct. When you do, step back and look at where the club is aiming. Give yourself a chance at a shot on target. Few things are as frustrating as hitting a great shot only to miss right because your alignment was skewed to the right.
