5 Stretches for People Who Sit All Day | Combat the Damage of Sitting 2021

– We’re meant to be outdoors. Our bodies evolved for it.

There’s no better way to wake up than getting outside and exposing yourself to natural light. This is something that I have personally done for the last 4 years, and it’s now to the point that I can’t imagine not doing it. (If I’m on vacation or in a unfamiliar setting, I get very anxious and antsy when I don’t.)

If your goal is to make this is a habit, I have a few tips for you.

#1 is to get a dog.
This will force you to go outside. But if you don’t want a dog, then I recommend “habit-sandwiching” it into your schedule by building it into one of your existing habits. For example, if the first thing you do when you wake up is to go to the kitchen and brew coffee, then you can make going outside what you do immediately afterwards. Say to yourself, “After I brew coffee, I will go outside for 5 minutes.” Even if it’s cold outside – you’ll be fine for a few minutes.
(Hint: You can use this habit-sandwiching technique for building any habit. I first learned of this concept in Atomic Habit by James Clear, and I highly recommend this book!)

Once you’re outside, I recommend you do at least 1 (or more) of these 3 things:

1. Mindfulness. Take a moment to be objective of yourself. Notice what you are doing, what you are thinking, and try to be non-reactive.

2. Movement. Go for a short walk. Do some light stretches. Lift your arms up, twist from side to side, or do a lunge. Any yoga posture will work for this.

3. Breathing. Take deep breaths, inhaling to expand your lungs as much as possible, and then squeezing out all the air from your lungs with your exhale.

I can promise you that if you start incorporating this simple, easy habit into your daily life that you will be happier, less stressed, and more energetic.
