Tripletail fishing in the Tampa Bay area is arguably the best Place in the Gulf of Mexico to target Tripletail.
These fish are found inside Tampa Bay early summer and early fall as they make their way in and out of our Estuary to spawn.
Tripletail are a pelagic species of fish that love to hangout with floating structure, such as Floating Debris, Crab traps buoys, channel markers, and day range markers, I’ve even caught Tripletail off small pieces of floating trash in the water.
Tripletail love these structures because of the large congregations of food that surround and live off such structures.
Tripletail will also use the structures they live in as cover from predators.
The setup I prefer to catch Tripletail is a 20 pound florocarbon leader about 3-4 foot should do the trick. And I will either use a cork,splitshot, or just freeline crabs,shrimp, or live sardines to the structure I think may be holding a Tripletail.
I like to fish each piece of structure for about 30-45 minutes before moving onto the next one.
