Beginner’s Guide to Golf

Buying Golf Clubs

Bwgennier golfer WITB 2021

In this episode of the Beginner’s Guide to Golf I go over the changes I have made to my set of Golf Clubs since last season, and why each club is in my bag. I believe that every club in your golf bag needs to serve a specific purpose. If you have clubs in your bag that don’t fill a specific need then remove them. YOU DON’T NEED TO PLAY 14 CLUBS! At one point I had 2 wedges that performed almost identically. I pulled one and replaced it with a Chipper. As a result my scores dropped. I used to play a 7 Wood, but realized it did the same things my 4 Hybrid did only not as well. So it got pulled, and I tried a 60 degree wedge instead. I was terrible with the 60 degree so I just removed it, and played 13 clubs for a while. My scores were better for it.

I currently have 14 clubs in my bag but only 13 of them are absolutely required. I am far from confident with my 3 Wood. If I can improve my consistency with it I will most certainly decrease my scores. It has a defined purpose for being in my bag, but I require the skill to make use of it. If I can’t develop the required consistency. I will just put the Chipper back into my bag. Having a Chipper saves me at least 1 stroke per Round. A consistent 3 Wood option could potentially save me 3 strokes on a longer course per Round so I will try to make it work early this season. On shorter courses it would still probably save me 1 stroke.

Golf is Art but it is also Math. Understand what each club can do for you, and which clubs you are best with. Then construct your set accordingly.
