Block vs. Variable Practice | The Golf Paradigm

Which is the best way to practice; Block or Variable?

Both Block and Variable Practice are very effective ways to improve your game. There are better times to use one vs the other to get the most use out of each.

Block Practice – This is the most common form of practice and refers to a golfer that repeatedly hitting the same type of shot, on the same trajectory, to the same target; i.e. not much changes. It is very useful when learning a new movement in the swing as it allows the mind/body adapt and understand the new movement as it repeats the motion repeatedly. It’s a great way to incorporate any changes made to your swing/stroke.

Variable Practice – This is when you change a variable; i.e. the club, target, trajectory, etc. repeatedly. Variable Practice brings more things into play and its intent is to prepare you for the ever changing variables of a round of golf or tournament.

Too often golfers will take a lesson days before a big event and try to cram a lot of Block Practice in the days leading into the event. Once at the event they have to switch from a Block mode to a Variable mode (playing a round of golf). This can be very difficult for many and not recommended.

If you have an important event coming up, its best to take a lesson well in advance. This will allow you to incorporate any necessary changes, while focusing on Block Practice, and gradually incorporate it into Variable Practice – hitting different shots to different targets. This allows you to train the body/brain with the new movement and then trains the body/brain back into ‘playing mode’ where you are more focused on the type of shot you’re hitting instead of how to hit it.

What is The Golf Paradigm (Pair-a-dime)?
The Golf Paradigm is a theory that encompasses a Whole-In-One approach to improvement. It begins with the overall paradigm; i.e. the game of golf. Followed by two parts that are always to remain in balance; i.e. the golf yin/yang – ‘improving’ and ‘enjoyment’. Helping to maintain that balance are the 5 elements of the game; the swing, club fitting, health/fitness, mental, and integration. Knowing which area to focus on and how the other areas supplement that helps to form the golfers ‘recipe’ for improvement. As the golfer improves their recipe, or what is focused on, changes and this is what allows them to reach levels of play they never thought possible. It’s not magical, but it’s close.
