Hi I’m Chris Mayson, Professional Golf Instructor at La Costa Resort and Spa. Great players are able to get their weight to the front foot and the club on plane on the way down. This gives them a really solid strike because they can hit off of a really firm front leg. Amateurs have a tendency to stand on their back foot and come over the top.

Here’s a great drill to get you feeling like you’re on your front foot while coming from the inside. It’s called the right foot back drill.

For right handers, bring your front foot forward a little bit and your back foot back. What this is going to allow you to do is get your weight to your front foot and get the club working from the inside on the way down. Keep about 70% of your weight on your front foot, get the club working to the inside. It should look like this.

If you do it properly you’ll compress the ball, your weight will be on your front foot, the club will come to the inside. It should start from the right for a right hander, and draw back to the left.

Try the right foot back drill, I’m sure you’ll be able to stop your habit of coming over the top.
