John Hughes Golf – A Drill to Clear Your Back Hip

Many golfers lose a lot of power by not being able to “rotate their hips as they swing. The loss of energy transfer from the ground through your body to the club, and then to the ball, is enormous!

Within this video golf tip, John Hughes, PGA Master Professional of Instruction and owner of John Hughes Golf, will show you with a simple homemade device, how you can transfer more energy to the golf ball by clearing your back hip. This video takes place at the 16th Hole Streamsong Resort’s Blue Course, designed by Tom Doak.

Using a tennis ball, clothes line, and some tape, you can make a swing aid that can wrap around your back leg at the thigh. The ball should hang from the line at approximately your mid-shin. Now it’s up to you to get the ball to wrap around your front leg as you swing forward. If you use the proper ground force of your back foot, this drill becomes very easy. And, it will supply additional power to your impact position, causing the ball to fly further.
