Decel Swing Error – How to Stop Decelerating in your Golf Swing

How to Fix your Deceleration ‘Decel’ Problem in your Golf Swing

Deceleration – or decel – in your golf swing is something that you should definitely try to avoid.

Ideally, in every part of your golf game you should be accelerating into impact with the ball. Whether it is from the teeing ground with your driver, from the fairway with your irons, to the greenside rough with a wedge or finally from the putting ground with your putter you need to accelerate the club as it heads into impact.

And accelerating takes the form of pulling your hands forward which in turn pulls your club forward. Indeed, any deceleration in your swing will see the clubhead start to catch up to your hands as they start slowing down and the club rides the momentum it has accumulated up to that point. And this in turn leads to all sorts of mishits.

In order to fix the decel swing error it is essential that your downswing is performed at a faster pace than your backswing. And a good way to make sure this happens is to start with a slow and/or short backswing to begin with. A too long backswing for a delicate shot such as a chip shot may lead to decelerating at impact, and the same for a putt.

Finally, the ‘decel’ swing error oftentimes creeps up in your game as a result of poor confidence and / or as a lack of commitment over an upcoming golf shot. Commit to your golf shots and execute them with confidence.
