More than 150 people signed up to play disc golf last weekend at Wintercrest Park. This was the first year for the tournament as part of Snowflake Days.
“The Snowflake Days event is a fun event,” said Jason Wilder, tournament director for the Snowflake Days Disc Golf Tournament.
With a flick of the wrist and a bit of body English to boot. Disc golfers are quite passionate about their sport. For the cost of entry to the tournament, the main sponsor, Dynamic Disc called it a two disc challenge.
“It puts two discs in their hands to go out and try disc golf, if they’ve never tried it before,” said Jason Wilder. “Or if they’re an experienced player to try maybe a brand that they haven’t thrown before.”
For disc golfers, trees are an ever-present hazard in the woods. Playing disc golf is often about lots of walking in the park, with friends, or in the case of the Bronson family – spending time with family.
“We just started playing, actually, this last July,” said Emily Bronson. “We needed an outing as a family, with all the stuff going on we needed to be outdoors.”
For Emily and her husband, Justin Bronson this was their first disc golf tournament, along with their boys, who played in the junior division.
“The course was really well maintained, the T-pads were nice, very packed down, easy to find discs, a very good experience,” Justin said.
“It was really cold at first, but once we got back in the woods it was awesome,” Emily added.
Further proof of how, hearty Minnesotans don’t stop playing outside, once the snow flies, they just dress in layers, and keep on playing.
“The disc golf world is very fun and very friendly to be a part of,” said Justin. “I look forward to doing more in the future.”
The top finishers in each of the four divisions received a trophy. And judging from the popularity, we could see the Snowflake Days Disc Golf Tournament return again next year.
