Wave 1 of the Girls’ Sweepstakes race (Race 19) at the 2020 Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival meet, held October 1-2, 2020 at the Links Golf Course in San Tan Valley, Arizona (course is 5000 Meters). The Sweepstakes races for athletes currently in high school competition season were seeded into waves (Wave 1 being fastest), so teams had athletes competing across three waves.
Tatum David of IMG Academy led from the start – stretching her lead to about 16 seconds for the last two miles, and won the race in 16:41.4. Lauren Ping of Desert Vista came in second in 16:57. Carlee Hansen of Woods Cross made a big surge in the last mile to almost beat Ping, coming in 3rd in 16:57. These three girls had the fastest times of the meet. A large gap formed after the top three finishers, with Katie Sigerud of Desert Vista placing 4th in 17:48, and Mia Hall of Flagstaff placing 5th in 17:53. In the team competition, IMG Academy won with 87 points, followed by Desert Vista (98 pts), Highland (113 pts), Perry (122 pts), and Flagstaff (156 pts).
