Mesut Ozil reflects on difficult time at Arsenal and calls on club to give him a chance
Mesut Ozil admits that it has been a very difficult time for him at Arsenal, and for the club as a whole, and wishes he was given the chance to help turn around their fortunes on the pitch.
The German has become a complete outcast at the Emirates, having been left out of the Premier League and Europa League squads this season and not making a single appearance yet this campaign.
The 32-year-old is out of contract in the summer and will leave the club then, or even earlier if they can move him on in January.
The problem for the Gunners has been that they do not want to play Ozil, for reasons that are not entirely clear, but have been unable to get rid of him due to his enormous £350 thousand-a-week wages.
In his absence Mikel Arteta’s side have been in dreadful form, sitting 15th in the Premier League and the Spaniard has come under increasing pressure due to the club’s highest earner contributing nothing while the first team struggle.
Ozil wants to be involved and says it is not that him that is hurting during this situation, but everyone at the club. Asked on Twitter if he is happy at Arsenal, Ozil replied: ‘It’s a very difficult time for everyone around the club – not just for me. ‘The situation is frustrating for everyone.
Of course I would wish I could help the team especially right now, but as long as I don’t get the chance I just hope that we get better results very soon again. ‘But let’s stay positive.’
Ozil has struggled for regular game time under both Arteta and previous manager Unai Emery, after Arsene Wenger brought him to the club.
The Germany international was asked if he considered the Frenchman a father figure and in a thinly veiled dig at the current stewardship, he said Wenger is missed at the Emirates.
‘He was really a fantastic manager – yeah, and also like a father figure for me and many other players,’ wrote Ozil. ‘I think many people around Arsenal are really missing him.’
Without Ozil in the squad, Arsenal is not good for attacking. With a famous team follow an attacking philosophy and beautiful football style, but they have only scored 12 goals in 14 Premier League games this season. This number is less than 13 goals that Liverpool striker Mo Salah has scored at the beginning of the season.
