Audi’s classy five-door A3 Sportback forms the basis of its compact entry to the plug-in hybrid fray. Combining a powerful electric motor with a 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine brings a useful boost in performance, while cutting emissions to a level that brings extremely low Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax for company-car drivers. It’s one of the most expensive A3’s to buy, though, and there’s a little less boot space than the regular Sportback. Traditional A3 virtues of sharp looks and a beautifully designed interior remain, however.
