Q. When your ball is embedded, are you entitled to free relief?

A. Firstly, your ball must be embedded in the general area, to be eligible for free relief, AND if it is in the rough, then it must not be embedded in sand.
From here, if you are entitled to free relief, your reference point is the point directly behind the ball, and you have a one club-length relief area within the general area, no nearer the hole, in which to drop.
For a ball that is embedded in the green, there is no free relief, but you may mark the ball, lift the ball, repair the pitch mark and then replace the ball.
