2020 December webinar: “Impacts of Gay Games Hong Kong on the younger generation”

Gay Games 11 Hong Kong (GGHK) is taking place in less than 2 years from now on November 11-19th 2022. This is a recording of our monthly December webinar and is a discussion around the impacts of the Games on the younger generation: the participants and volunteers from 18 to 25 years old.

We invited a panel of LGBTQ+ youth and members of the GGHK team for a 1 hour discussion:

– Jodie Chan
Jodie is a sports enthusiast and a student at the University of Hong Kong. She is also a member of the social and advocacy team in Queer Straight Alliance (QSA), a student organisation that unites LGBTQ+ students and allies across campuses in Hong Kong and promotes diversity and inclusion in University.

– Ben Rowlett
Ben is an Assistant Professor of Sociolinguistics in the Department of English Language and Literature at Hong Kong Baptist University and a volunteer for GGHK. His research focuses on social action from the perspective of language, gender and sexuality.

– Sebastian Turner
Sebastian was born and raised in Hong Kong. He joined OutSwimmers HK in April 2018, and with the encouragement of Coach Derde Luis Exposito, Sebastian competed in Gay Games Paris 2018.

– Henry Chu
Henry is a running enthusiast and studying health sciences at HKIVE. A participant in the GG Paris 2018. His passion is long distance running and helping others.

The discussion is moderated by Betty Grisoni, Gay Games Hong Kong’s Head of D&I.

What are the Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2022?
Gay Games Hong Kong will have 36 Sports, Opening & Closing Ceremonies, Arts & Culture Events and the Festival Village. We’re expecting 12,000 participants and more than 75,000 spectators from 60 different countries/regions in November 2022. The events are open for all and no pre-qualification is required. For many participants this will be a once-in-a-lifetime never-to-be-forgotten experience, building lifelong friendships. It will help to promote a diverse & inclusive society and breakdown stereotypes, under Gay Games Hong Kong’s theme #UnityInDiversity. The first Gay Games were held in San Francisco in 1982 and we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Games!
