Qwirkle: Using a range of addition strategies with the game Qwirkle

This video demonstrates how a parent can encourage mental math strategies when playing Qwirkle.
What grade levels might this be most appropriate for?
-Grades 2-3 (core instruction)
-Grades 4-5 (rehearsal and practice)

What’s the math?
-Mentally adding to 100(2-digit + 1-digit and 2-digit + 2-digit work )

-Ways parents might support their kids:

Encourage them talk about how they added.

Have them to write it down to help verbalize their strategy.

Model efficient mental math strategies (I.e. I know 1 more is 10 and then 4 more is 14)

Allow ‘counting by ones’ when it is needed and also ask if there is a different way to solve it.

Vary the game by playing so many “rounds” rather than using all of the tiles. This helps to keep the total in a range of comfort for your child.
