I have several times considered the plug in hybrid the perfect solution until fully electric cars and the charging infrastructure improve to provide the the ultimate vehicle solution.
On each occasion I find myself concluding that Hybrids are not the solution as they are neither one thing or the other.
They are excellent at supporting petrol engines in delivering additional and smooth power but they do no provide a truly efficient solution.
The high Mpg figures given to them are merely due to the test cycle which measures mpg favouring cars that burn no energy in stopped situations and city driving. They are not indicative of real world situations.
Hybrids are a compromise. A half way house, neither one thing or the other but as a fun performance can they work. The Golf GTE is definitely desirable but I’m not looking to buy a hot hatch.
Prius owners are early adopters just as Nissan Leaf owners are in the fully electric world but hybrids now are more for those nervous of going electric and want to hold onto the traditional car model for a while longer.
