Playing “one side” of the hole
From the get-go, your swing pattern should be an indicator as to which side of the hole you should play. In Bruce’s case, since he’s a lefty, he immediately took out the right side of the hole. In your mind’s eye, you should imagine which side of the hole you want your ball to go, while also keeping in mind the hazards along the way.

Finding the optimum tee position
The first indicator for managing your game is usually the ball position within the tee box. If you notice that you definitely need to avoid one side of the hole due to hazards or how the hole bends, then you should position your tee in a place where you know your shot would benefit. This means finding the right tee position that will open up the playing field for your tee shot and the shots to follow.

Setup & path for more fairways
By setting up your tee in a position that guarantees good ball placement for your future shots, this ultimately leads to smarter plays and an easier round. Once you have your tee position set, the following decisions will be dependent on two factors: your clubface control and the path of your ball. Be aware that the direction of the ball is dictated by where the clubface is pointed at impact. So if the face is pointing right on impact, the ball will go right, and the same goes for a shot that goes left. Being conscious of your clubface position will will orient the direction of your ball flight.
