The Road Back: The Benefits of Tackling a Golf Course Renovation During the Pandemic

Park Ridge (Ill.) Country Club had been in the planning process to replace the worn sand in its golf course bunkers for a couple of years, to address drainage issues and improve playability. The club planned to start the process at the end of the summer of 2020, but as Golf Course Superintendent Joel Purpur describes in this episode, after the pandemic hit the decision was made, for several reasons, to move up the schedule and complete all of the work in the spring. As a result, Purpur says, Park Ridge was not only able to keep all of its grounds maintenance crew working, it saved money on the project and was able to unveil an improved course in time for the return of more golfers. “The visual impact of the new bunkers is outstanding, and golf at Park Ridge is the best it’s ever been,” says Purpur.
