Are you struggling with your long irons?

Are you struggling to hit your long irons consistently?

Over the years lofts of clubs have reduced as manufacturers recognise that distance SELLS!

You can see how much change there has been from the set of clubs I turned pro with in 1997 compared to the Mavrik Max irons launched this year.

My 8 iron was nearly the same loft as a pitching wedge today!

Now, I have no problem with amateur golfers gaining yardage, after all, that’s more fun, and having fun playing golf is what it’s all about.

However, we see lots of golfers every day on the range and on the courses that are struggling to hit the long irons consistently, and in many cases a 7 iron will go further than a 4 or 5 iron! Is that you?

With a 4 iron at 20 degrees of loft, even with loads of technology built into the clubhead to make it easier to hit, that’s still a tough one for most golfers.

In the late 90’s early 2000’s Taylormade introduced the rescue club which popularised the new category of clubs called the hybrid.

This type of club is easier to hit than a 3 iron and now features in the bag of most amateurs and many tour players too.

However, we believe that more of you should consider adding hybrids further up the set, including the 5, 6 or even 7 iron.

Trust me, until you have tried this you might well think it’s not for you. And granted, it isn’t for everyone but when you are getting a fitting for your next set of clubs it is definitely something to consider.

So, over the years I have occasionally put a hybrid in the bag but it has never lasted, I have always preferred long irons and currently have 2,3 and 4 iron.

What I like about the Mizuno JPX flihi is the fact you can get it in the same shaft as your irons – so it feels much more like the iron set and not a fairway wood. At the end of the day, the hybrids are to replace the equivalent iron so that’s a good thing.

The head is much bigger than we see on some hybrids but this makes it super easy to hit and if I’m honest – it is really easy to hit. It feels like one of those clubs that you can step on to the course having not played for a while and still get a good result with it.

I hit a couple of shots a bit thin and off centre but it still flies great and certainly better than I would have got with my 5 iron.

In conclusion
It doesn’t matter what handicap level you are at – you have to be honest with yourself. Get on the launch monitor and hit some shots with your long irons and then try the equivalent hybrid

Hybrids might not be for everyone but they really do work. I know many of you already carry at least one hybrid but stop buying 4iron to pitching wedge when in reality you only hit the 4 and 5 iron the proper distance 1 in 10 shots.

You can now get these hybrids up to 7 iron so don’t choose vanity over sanity. Give one a try today.
