The New York Islanders have traded defenceman Devon Toews to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for two second round picks in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft and the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.
The Avalanche upgrade their defence, while the Islanders free up more salary to sign Mathew Barzal.
This comes after the Avalanche acquired forward Brandon Saad from the Chicago Blackhawks, and it also comes after both the Avalanche and Islanders were eliminated from the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Vegas Golden Knights got eliminated by the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals in Game 5, and the New York Islanders were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6.
Of the Conference Semi-Final matchups, the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and Philadelphia Flyers have been eliminated.
