One of the most important tenets of putting is that regardless of the length of your putt, the timing it takes you to make your backstroke and get back to the ball should be similar on every length of putt.
Knowing the timing piece as well with employing the dead weight strategy previously discussed, will help you to hit your lag putts closer to the hole, and maybe even hole one from time to time.
