How Beginner Golfers can lower their scores
In this episode of Cobe Life on the course, Oliver and I lean on our short game skills to maintain momentum going into the final hole at Winchester Golf Club. As always every Round between Oliver and I is very competitive. We hadn’t been keeping an exact running score but knew we were probably within a shot of each other. The 17th hole is what appears to be an easy Par 3. What you can’t see on the video is the climb you have to make before you reach the Tee. 16 previous holes of golf, and then a steep hill climb can take a bit out of you. That adds another degree of difficulty to what appears to be an easy Tee shot.
For most Beginners Greens in Regulation are hard to come by. It doesn’t matter if it’s from the Tee on a short Par 3, a long Pitch shot approach on a Par 4, or a straight forward approach shot on a Par 5. I am basically a Bogey golfer, and it’s a banner day when I hit over 30% of Greens in Regulation. It’s for this reason that a golf beginner’s short game is one of the most important skills to develop early. Honestly I have played with single digit handicappers who don’t have as good a short game as I. Truth be told they don’t require it. They hit far more Greens in Regulation than I. When they miss they usually don’t miss by much.
Around the Green you will see me use my Wedges, Chipper, Putter, or Hybrids. Each one works in different situations. Understanding where each works best is key to keeping my scores low. Of course you can Chip like Patrick Reed, and get it close often. That won’t matter if you haven’t developed a steady hand with your Putter. Work on both equally, and watch as your scores decrease.
