Q.
If you are permitted to lift your ball, must you mark it first?
.
.
A.
If you are lifting your ball under a Rule that requires you to replace the ball, then you MUST mark it before you lift it, such situations would include:
Before lifting it on the putting green,
To identify it as yours,
To inspect whether it is cut or cracked.

Situations where you wouldn’t be required to mark it before lifting it include:
Taking free relief from an immovable obstruction,
Taking a penalty drop from a penalty area,
Taking a preferred lie under Local Rule E-3.
