Riley Wheeldon: On the Rise – 10 Champion Insights for Winning Results

The ascent of Riley Wheeldon has been strong and steady. Most recently he was crowned champion of the Syncrude Boreal Open in Fort McMurray Alberta at the 4th event on the PGA Tour Canada schedule. He is the current order of merit leader in the drive for 5 Web.com Tour cards.

The lead up has been nothing short of persistent and consistent check marks of progression. With a few top 5’s on the NGA Tour Riley finally decided it was his time to breakthrough (literally) at the Kandy Waters event scoring him a winners cheque of $30,500, the largest development tour prize on record.

This was a milestone event for Riley pushing his confidence and hunger even higher. He started the PGA Tour Canada schedule with a T3 at the Times Colonist event closely followed with a T2 at the VGT’s Vancouver Open.

When he rolled into Fort Mac, it was his time again.

Riley is mature beyond his 22 years and has a better understanding of the mental side of golf then most players twice his age. He knows how to think well, has a great perspective on achievement, and most importantly he knows what works for him.

In my interview with Riley, he outlines very clearly what his line of thinking is – and why – to get the most out of his game. Some highlights of our discussion include:

How to know when to change your game plan during your round. – 4.10
The most important part of a pre-shot routine…and no it’s not clockwork – 10.02
Riley’s secret weapon this year to his clarity, vision, and success. – 11.00
Confidence – how he builds it to last and keeps building layers. – 14.20
How he made a 9 in round two, yes 9, and still won. What did he say to himself? – 20.48
Champion practice habits – 23.26
Why he isn’t concerned with staying in the present and avoiding distractions…with one very important exception. 30.54
Riley is a man on a mission but like any great player he doesn’t take success for granted. His mental game is clear, concise, and well thought out. By his own assessment, it IS the reason for his success this year.

Great thinking….creates opportunities….for championship performance. Here’s Riley Wheeldon…
