3 Serratus Anterior Activation Drills To Use With Shoulder Pain

This is a quick video showing how you can improve your shoulder stability by using 3 different serratus anterior activation drills. I also show you how to use trigger point release between sets to release any stiffness that may inhibit the mobility of the shoulder but also the serratus anterior from working. Lastly I also show you in this video how to use a simple shoulder impingement test to see if the exercises are having any effect.
Why is serratus anterior so important?

Why don’t I just spend time just massaging and stretching tight areas of the shoulder?
What you will find is that the underlying problem with most shoulder and neck problems is poor scapula control. This is where there is a lack of posterior tilt and upward rotation of the scapula that has a disastrous effect on the stability of the shoulder. The supraspinatus tendon is often the muscle that ends up in pain from the lack of stability.

The area from where the clavicle and the spine of the scapula and the acromion meet, between this area, the AC joint, and the humeral head of the shoulder, we have a very small space called the subacromial space. If you develop an inflamed tendon from poor movement or maybe sit for long periods in poor posture, it doesn’t take much to decrease the space we have in that area. When that space gets decreased, we end up with some shoulder impingement.

This video also shows you a variation of the Serratus Anterior Wall Slides Drill that I have used when the overhead version is too difficult. The side lying version also allows you to work just on the injured side. This was an exercise founded by movement function pioneer Shirley Sahrmann in her book “Movement Impairment Syndromes” and is the cornerstone of many physical therapists shoulder rehabilitation programs for it works so well.
