Volkswagen Golf GTE plug-in hybrid review – Carbuyer

The Volkswagen Golf GTE is a plug-in hybrid version of the popular Golf hatchback. It combines a 148bhp turbocharged petrol engine with a battery that brings power to a total of 201bhp. Volkswagen claims fuel economy will be as much as 166mpg, while CO2 emissions are just 39g/km, which means you’ll pay zero road tax.

The GTE is capable of travelling 31 miles on battery power alone, so it’s feasible that you could commute without using any petrol if your journey to work is just around town. The GTE costs from £33,755 before the Government’s £5,000 plug-in and electric car grant.
