In this video I’m going to show you my favorite compression drill, one that I use myself and in my practice to really hit the ball more solid.

For this drill, we’re going to use a hanger – just a normal hanger from home, nothing special about it, just a plastic one. The whole point of the hanger is that throughout my swing I’m going to keep a portion of the hanger on my wrist and the goal with that and what I’m really training in here is wrist conditions. We’re going to put it on the left side of the club. I’m looking to put my right hand thumb basically all the way at the end of the hanger.

Some people will use it during the backswing and kind of press the hanger up against their wrists. It’ll give you that sensation in terms of bowing that lead wrist or bending that right wrist back. I don’t personally feel it a ton there. What I’m really looking for is feeling it pressed on my wrist during the downswing. As I start down I feel like I crank it onto my wrist even more. It starts to tilt my clubface down towards the ground so it’s not too open.

My lead wrist goes from just a slight extension I normally have at the top and I actually turned that down into a bowed position. It gets the club head nicely back out in front and points the clubface down. Once I get to the where the club’s parallel to the ground, the face tilted down, and left wrist is flat I’m done with my arms and hands. From there I’m just trying to transport that into my follow through.

I’m feeling like from the top, I’m cranking my lead wrist down, I’m flexing my lead wrist, I’m bending my right wrist back. I’m feeling the hanger pressing against my forearm more than normal. I’m cranking the face down and that’s good and that’s part of it, but I also have to turn with that. Those pieces have to go together. When do you turn? I feel like I turn a lot after I crank it down, but you can turn right from the top with it.

I’m taking that dynamic loft where it is normally and I’m trying to crank that thing forward. I’m pushing the hanger against my lead wrist. If I push that forward, my handle goes forward, my club stays back and it takes the loft off. That’s what I’m trying to feel. I’m just feeling it here and then I’m transporting that into my follow through. And when I check that on Trackman, it takes my dynamic loft down a couple of degrees relative to normal, increases my angle of attack a little bit and neutralizes my path. So, you could literally grab this training aid – that costs a few cents – out of your closet and make a huge impact on your golf swing.
