McIlroy, Lowry card 8-under 64 | Round 3 | Zurich Classic | 2024

In third-round Four-ball play at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry combined to card an 8-under 64 to get to 21-under for the tournament, placing them just two strokes off the lead heading into Sunday.

The PGA TOUR heads to New Orleans this week for the Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana. This is the only two-man team event on the PGA TOUR schedule. Rory McIlroy makes his tournament debut alongside good friend, Ryder Cup teammate and fellow Irishman Shane Lowry. McIlroy is looking to build some momentum this season, as he has posted only one top-15 thus far (third at the Valero Texas Open). Lowry recently went T4-3rd-T19 on the Florida Swing. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele play together this week in an attempt to claim the title back after their victory in 2022. Cantlay played well for a T3 finish last week at the RBC Heritage, while Schauffele’s T2 at THE PLAYERS Championship and 8th place finish at the Masters will give him confidence. The pair claimed T4 in defense of their title last year. Davis Riley and Nick Hardy will defend their 2023 title this week. No team has ever gone back-to-back at this event. Others to look out for are Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris, as well as three sets of brothers including Alex and Matt Fitzpatrick, Rasmus and Nicolai Højgaard and Parker and Pierceson Coody.

yeah he had to be very cautious with
that with Rory over the
green okay he follows it chases it in
there he knew he made it so nice birdie
for Shane
Lowry a little fist pump for Rory
maroy left hole location can use that
wind to swoop it
in ground will help

tooa and this is the hardest hole on the
course so far today it’s yielded only
three birdies and you can see how much
that shut means to
Lowry back into the wind as well
yep and a birdie for mroy
three under on their opening nine and
they going to need some more on the back
nine to get them going they certainly
have the crowd in their favor record
turnouts so far this week and mroy a big
reason
why this is aggressive thought he that
had some hang time riding that
wind hasn’t been particularly Happ with
the way he’s driven the golf ball that’s
one of the reasons why this drive went
so far down here for
maroy is that any good could go
in that’ll be three and four holes for
that team well they need it too it’s for
sure how well did he judge this bounce
over here he’s got the ball back in his
stance a little hooded there try and get
it to come out tumbling
and had to judge the downwind roll even
more special so back to back bir
feror and a reachable power five to
come yeah Lowry shot at nine then that
one at 10 that’s some short cut as we go
to
11 and the opened face lob wedge fer
Rory yeah that’s got 58 Dees of Loft on
it 10° of Bounce which is more than he’s
usually had sure that is
good very nicely spun there reminds me
of that shot he hit at the Ridder cup
the pass three from way left 17 when he
had all that spin on the ball late in
the day with the huge crowds around
playing golf together 11 live at 11 with
Rory and he makes it do it good up and
down it sure was his short gamees on
fire here the last 40 minutes or so
finally do he said slow start one under
through six four under the last five
373 straight at it everything helping in
that direction he jumped out of his
shoes

Rory odd sort of Li Frank uphill and a
hooking
lie should release nicely

it’s some nice pitch shots today has it
wasn’t a high spot at the
Masters good three for maroy they’re
trying to clean things up after the PO
start and a lot of support for his first
time ever here

that is definitely to the conservative
side it’s all
right that’s where you wish the players
were miked up and you could ask them
like what went through that decision
process that’s
right pitching wedge in his

he doesn’t like it you think two of the
best players in the world and the best
they’re going to have is like 25 ft for
dirty they make the
three up the

oh and that took a bad bounce on mroy
Into the Bunker we’ve seen before but
he’s going to be in a better spot there
cuz he’s a bit more on the up slope but
that ball really was a couple feet from
Catching the shoulder and going down to
about 25 ft check here they knew it it
was close to being pretty darn
good this is a nice shot Here Andrew
that wind is heavy out of the right he’s
launching that high fade to hold it
just a couple
feet good contact
there and a great shot by
mroy he really has turned it on around
the turn bir’s at 9 10 11 13 16 and 18
on his own ball
they really didn’t want to get up early
tomorrow Shane saying thanks PS thanks
for finding your game the last couple
hours so they will be in the penultimate
pairing
tomorrow mroy and Lowry just two shots
off the
lead slow start as we pointed out but
mroy really carried them down the street

see they had a ton of green to work with
he read the break to
Perfection doy just gave the stats
better than 60% he’s
33rd on tour this season out of the
bunkers so one of his
weapons releasing that toe down and
through

that’s how you do
it that is a work of art right there
mroy thought it was going to
go so mroy and Lowry a 64 today in best
ball
format and they will be hunting for the
win in New Orleans for the final round
tomorrow

let’s check in with Amanda well Shane
Lowry just came in and said we put on
quite the show today you guys got off to
kind of a slow start yeah we did we got
off to a slow start and then Rory Melo
turned up on the ninth hole and it was
all him from there on in and I was just
there kind of you know enjoying the ride
but um yeah it was a nice day I mean
like you said slow start which was
annoying because you look at the
leaderboard and everyone was going you
know shooting well under power but uh
it’s nice to be in the hunting in the
second last group tomorrow Trevor ilman
said he feels like it’s such an advant
when you have two guys who’ have been
friends for as long as you two have to
give each other some slack when things
don’t go right does this friendship give
you guys an edge as you try to win here
for your first time Rory I hope so I
hope it gives us an edge um yeah I think
you know we we sort of know what makes
the other one tick in some ways and um
you know we’ve gez we’ve known each
other for 25 years so um yeah if we I
think so I think it’s uh I think it’s
good to be out there with a friend and
sort of you know he
he tries to keep me positive at times I
I have to try to keep him positive at
times and you know it’s it’s worked
really well for the first three days the
biggest roller coaster of the day at
least from us watching was 16 so Shane
we got to ask strategy Club Choice off
the tea and then the look you two get C
under the bus
now yeah I I mean Rory hit a good t-
shot there and I tried to get it a
little bit further down but I mean why
are we showing this uh um can we not
show some birdies now it ends on a
postive aoup bir is you pouring in about
25 foot of her birdie and that look you
two gave each other it just felt like
you two thought we got away with it and
that means something yeah absolutely I
think I didn’t hit a very good wedge
shot after uh she flew the green with
his third um but to see that puck go in
was huge and then um and then I would
say the the best shot of the day was
Sheen’s on on 17 I blew my KNE to the
right and he had a he hadit a great
t-shot and um you know that was a that
was a huge that was a huge shot just to
sort of keep the moment he’s trying to
make me feel good now I love this Vibes
are clearly good te teammates well done
today oh he they’re going to okay sorry
Shane that was that was when I when I
saw the ball start laugh to the pin I
was like what are you
doing there all right so we’re really
