I want to share with you why this drill
is helping golfers strike the ball
better get a way better feeling of how
to hit the ball than the turf with their
irons they can use it with drivers as
well but let’s stick with medium irons
it’s shocking what’s happening through
my students when I do this with them
they think this is crazy you do it they
think Ah that’s not going to work and
then they start hitting shots and they
are like boom light bul moment you want
better strikes of your irons do this so
when we measure people on the swing
Catalyst du for Force plates here we see
a common pattern amongst amate golfers
who don’t really want to use the forces
they put in the ground and believe me
they put forces through the ground but
they don’t want to use them at the right
time and one of the biggest
breakthroughs for me was when I first
got my plates realizing how much force I
used but just how much at the wrong time
I use it which equated to poor striking
funny body positions that you see on 2D
camera and just not as solid a struck
golf shots so we’re going to talk about
vertical Force at the for this idea but
it actually when you start improving say
vertical Force so vertical force is this
so feeling like you’re jumping so
pushing into the ground then pushing up
off you actually start changing all the
other forces as well cuz they all are
intrinsically linked they’re all kind of
so combined and the drill is so simple
for golfers what we do is we take all
the time away we make them run out of
time and the reason we do this is
because golfers think they have way too
much time meaning so many golfers hit
shots stay buried in the ground and then
are very late to try and get their
vertical forces out they do get them out
because as they start coming up around
here they then start pushing off the
ground or into the ground and the ground
pushes back at them but none of it gets
out on the ball it’s just too late so
often the best way to speed people up is
to make them later think about it when
people are late they generally drive a
little bit faster to where they’re
trying to go they might take the
shortcut more which is a trickier route
but they just try to get there quicker
when you take time away from a golfer
it’s very interesting how they then try
to work out how to hit the ball so we’re
going to do two things we’re going to
take time away so it’s so simple this
drill set yourself up I’ve got an A on
in my hand so grab a medium iron and I
want you to do this with a club with
medium Loft I don’t want you doing this
with a wedge I want you to look at a
straighter face Club than a lofted club
so your normal full setup then I want
you just to take the club back so it’s
halfway between first parallel and a
dress so a quarter of the way back
between first parallel or half of the
way back I should say between force
parallel and address so it’s about here
now what I’m going to do is I’m going to
push down I’m been bending my knees
might compress my spine a little bit and
I’m going to really push into the ground
feeling like if I was stood on something
that you could crush you know if you
were stood on grass or snow that you’re
really trying to get into that grass or
that snow or that mud whatever you’re
imagining under your feet I’m really
pushing it down and I’m going to try and
hit that ball out in front of me now if
I don’t get out of the way from here I’m
going to crash I’m too low I’m sunken
I’m in I’m buried the club will just
crash so the idea from here is the sink
and then as quick as you can feel like
you get up and out of it to try and hit
the ball first shot complete Duff wasn’t
quick enough I don’t have enough time so
guess what I need to do and students
work out what they need to do as I need
to engage my muscles my body and get out
quicker I need to react
faster to get out of that crash
situation better strike bit straighter
much better ball than ground contact and
I was way quicker at getting out from
that very limited time now watch what I
do with my back swing I do have a little
pump so from here I have a little pump
with my body and I might have a little
then kind of pump to try and get some
momentum I try and stay in this position
but don’t mind if you pump back a little
bit as well you’ve got no time from here
there we go that’s perfect like I can
totally feel my legs going up I can feel
my hips rotating so this one down that
one up shoulders rotating this one up
that one down and by taking all that
time away I can really
feel how energetic I need to be through
my body to get this sned out in time and
apply it to your shots so many golfers
are buried as they hit the ball in the
ground staying connected not getting out
to players generally are way better at
getting those forces out earlier meaning
that’s why often you watch them and they
look effortless like the power they put
in it looks effortless there’s loads of
effort they’re just doing it all so
efficiently they don’t have to look like
they’ve got loads of flailing Parts
which is what amateur often look like
they have to have so once I’ve worked a
few of these into shots Don’t Be Afraid
as well to feel when you push down I’m
pushing down with both feet like I’m
pushing down into my toes so I’m not
pushing down I worked out from here that
if I push into my heels well I can’t
jump from there enough to strike it so I
feel like you’re pushing down into the
balls of your feet and your toes so
you’ll find that your heels even on both
feet want to come up slightly so they’re
slightly peeling up and also feel like
you’re a fraction more lead side but way
less than you think you don’t have to be
over here which is what lots of people
think they do cuz if you do that’s
actually horizontal force that you’re
using which might delay your vertical
Force so feel like you’re pretty even to
a little bit more loaded on this side
but only a fraction and then both legs
start to straighten up body comes up you
still got your tilts in your shoulders
it’s not going to be early extension cuz
you are rotating with tilts you’re not
doing it by going like this you’re doing
it by actually introducing more angles
which is what’s sending that ball that
club into a good ball then to strike you
work it into shots so I’m going to have
a practice swing here up and out get get
that feeling get that feeling of that
real
fast jump down at the bottom and you’re
going to see a difference in the way you
strike the ball take your time away you
will have to speed up or you will crash
give this a practice let me know if it
works and if you want more ideas on how
to strike these clubs better use this
video it continues this idea on it’s

  1. Interesting drill. I like the discussion about using the ground forces to your advantage and not against you. Thanks for this video. Also love the Podcast!!! Keep them coming.
